What is Outlook nk2 File?

Email addresses can be difficult to remember, so Outlook tries to make our life easier. The Outlook Nickname Cache is an Outlook Autocomplete feature that remembers the addresses you emailed in the past and offers suggestions as you begin typing the email recipient in the To, CC, or BCC fields.

Outlook Nickname Cache File Locations & Name

Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007: The Outlook nickname file cache is stored in an Outlook NK2 file. It is named the same as your Outlook profile name, has the extension nk2, and is located here:

  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
  • Windows Vista / Windows 7: C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

Outlook 2010: Beginning with Outlook 2010, the nickname file cache is no longer stored in a separate Outlook NK2 file. It is stored as part of your mail profile, and the files are now located here:

  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache
  • Windows Vista / Windows 7: C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache

The Outlook 2010 extension is .dat and the naming format is: Stream_Autocomplete_0_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.dat ( the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is a random string).

Import nk2 File into Outlook 2010

Outlook 2010 no longer uses a nk2 file. When upgrading from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2010 or from Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2010, it now becomes necessary to import nk2 file from 2003 to 2010 or import nk2 file from 2007 to 2010.

Here are the steps to import nk2 file into Outlook 2010:

Place the nk2 file here:

  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
  • Windows Vista / Windows 7: C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook
  • Variable Location: Start – Run: %appdata%\microsoft\outlook

Import nk2 File into Outlook 2010: File Name:

The nk2 file must be named the same as your Outlook Profile. The default Outlook profile is named “Outlook”. If you are unsure, you can check in the control panel: Start – Control Panel (view as icons) – Mail – Show Profiles Button.

The command must be done from a command prompt or from the Run box, we will execute the command from the Run box:

Open the Run box: To do so, you can either:

  • Click Start – click Run, or
  • On your keyboard, press and hold the Windows key and press the R key.

In the Run window, type: outlook.exe /importnk2, and click OK

This will import nk2 file into outlook 2010 and merge the contents with your current Outlook 2010 nickname cache. Once it’s imported, the file will be renamed with a .old extension.
