Computer Repair Sacramento – Knowledge Base: How to Resolve This Patch Package Could Not Be Opened .NET error.
I got this error after cleaning up a virus on a Windows Vista computer. Windows Update kept failing on a .NET 1.1 Framework update, so I decided to remove and reinstall .NET 1.1. Here are the screenshots:
Ah, no wonder the update failed. The Framework has somehow been damaged or become corrupted. Tried rebooting, etc, but even after many tries, the stubborn .NET 1.1 Framework refused to uninstall. Really?
If you are having this issue and do some online research, most likely you will find the same instructions I did referencing the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility Tool (MSICUU2.EXE); however, this tool has been removed. Even if you are able to locate a copy, it can damage other components during the removal routine, so using it is not recommended. I’ll pass; I don’t like solving one problem and creating another!
This Patch Package Could Not Be Opened – Fix:
That’s when I remembered another utility specifically designed and built to fix .NET issues like this, when you have a botched .NET installation or are unable to remove .NET framework. It is called the .NET Framework Setup Cleanup Utility. Although I had a copy in my digital toolbox, I visited the author’s webpage to download the most recent version.
The current version of the .NET Framework Setup Cleanup Utility is a selective removal tool. In other words, it only removes the .NET Framework versions you specify, which is good behavior because you many have multiple versions installed. In the screenshot, I’ve selected .NET Framework 1.1, and am about the click the Cleanup Now button:
The first time I ran the utility, it failed, so I re-ran it a second time and it completed successfully. I rebooted and downloaded the full .net 1.1 Framework installation file and tried reinstalling the .NET 1.1 Framework, here’s progress:
And the result, success!
